Robots…penguins…robotic penguins…what’s not to like!

A recent NewScientist article describes a German technology firm that demonstrates rececent research on designing robotic penguins.  Not only can they swim gracefully in water, but the helium-filled versions can actually swim through the air!  This is way better than “flying toasters”.

Robot farmers

An article on robotics research being applied to farming fruits and vegetables.  And note, from the article… “If the base of the robot shown in the video below looks familiar – it is – having begun life as an iRobot Roomba vacuum cleaner.”  Sweet!  Clearly I need to start surfing Roomba hacking sites to see what I can do with mine.

Can’t have too many robots.

The EU-sponsored I-SWARM project is looking at the possibility of using small robots functioning in a cooperative swarm to provide repair support to Mars missions (as well as others).  The idea is to compensate for harsh conditions with high-redundancy and task distribution.
